A baby on the way

Sarah Lewis is 'part of the family' and soon she'll bring another addition.

She’s helped raise the most precious people in Jo and Jeff Healey’s life – their three sons.

For six years Sarah’s helped care for twins, Ethan and Liam, watching them develop from babies and Ryan, who was three when she started, is equally treasured.

Sarah affectionately calls the trio, her ‘wee men.’ But soon their relationship will change - in late July Sarah is expecting her first child and will take maternity leave.

Jo and Jeff are working through PORSE to find a nanny to help the family in the interim, but have asked Sarah to return part-time in January – bringing her new baby with her.

“I’ll help run the house day-to-day and I’ll also be there when the kids are sick, during the school holidays and when Jo and Jeff have to travel with their jobs. It’s for their piece of mind as well as mine. I’ll have bub with me, which is fantastic. Jo always says, ‘You’re never allowed to leave,’ and I don’t want to,” Sarah laughs.

When the couple found Sarah, they knew she was the perfect match for their busy household - a nanny who has not only become an incredibly valuable asset to her family but also a friend.

“Sarah’s now really part of us. Even though there’s an employer / employee relationship it doesn’t feel that way,” says Jo, who is managing director for Fujitsu New Zealand.

Sarah had an excellent background in managing multiples (twins/ triplets). She has a real calmness about her,” Jo continues.

As the boys have gotten older, Sarah’s adjusted with them, adapting her knowledge of early childhood education as each year has gone by.

Although the boys are now at school, Sarah still works full-time for the family.

She starts at 7.30am, making sure the children are dressed, fed and are taken to school. Throughout the day she manages the household, running errands, preparing the family meal before picking the boys up at the end of the day and helping them with their homework - keeping the house ticking over.

Jo and Jeff, who is sales director for HP Networking for Asia/Pacific, have incredibly demanding roles, often involving travel and time away from the home. Sarah is their right hand woman.

“There’s been occasions where Jeff’s away, and I’ve missed a flight or a flight’s been cancelled. I remember one evening calling Sarah saying, ‘I’m stuck.’ I know that Sarah’s always ready, willing and able to step in, stay with the boys and make sure they’re really well taken care of if something does happen to one of us,” Jo says.

Sarah’s bond with the boys is so special she asked them to her wedding day in March last year. Ryan, Ethan and Liam donned tuxedos and proudly watched their nanny tie the knot.

“I’ve had other bubbas,” Sarah says, “but I’ve invested earlier in these kids lives. And even though I’m having my first soon, I still want to be part of theirs.”
